Scholem grew up in assimilated Berlin in a Jewish family not much interested in Judaism. However he discovered the religion and developed a specific interest in Jewish mysticism, becoming recognised as a scholar on account of his several academic and other books on the subjects and his position then as professor of Jewish mysticism at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem. The book is dedicated to his brother Werner, murdered in Buchenwald in July 1940.
