Book
Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. Conabere, Elizabeth (illustrator). 192 pages. "ELIZABETH Conabere, an outspoken and occasionally outrageous, larger-than-life character who was also a nationally recognised botanical artist, writer and conservationist, has died at her home in Mansfield. She was 80.In 1965, she was commissioned by the National Herbarium of Victoria to paint a series of 50 illustrations of alpine plants, and she exhibited widely with the Society of Wildlife Artists, of which she was a founding member. In 1968, publisher Thomas Nelson commissioned her to illustrate Wildflowers of South-Eastern Australia. The 384 paintings formed 80 plates, with the originals later acquired by the Victorian Government. They are in the La Trobe Library. The Victorian Lands Department commissioned her to paint a series that she titled Beautiful Noxious Weeds; it toured the state's regional galleries, and several of the paintings were reproduced in the Atlas of Victoria (1986). She also produced three series of stamps for Australia Post: roses, eucalypts and wildflowers. Conabere wrote and illustrated An Australian Countrywoman's Diary (Collins, 1986), which conveys her delight in the complexity and resilience of the natural world, and her anger at public ignorance and environmental vandalism." (Janet Mckenzie Obituary SMH).
