Des Moines, Iowa: Iowa Printing Co., 1885. First edition. Original brown cloth, lettered in gilt, decorated in gilt and blind, illustrated, 316 pages. Narrative of an attack by a band of Sioux after a long, desperate winter in the northeast of Iowa in March of 1857. Sparcely populated, many of the settlers were killed. The author and three other women were taken captive, Miss Gardner was ransomed four months later. Reprinted many times. A little wear, rubbing, dark stain at fore-corner of the front board. Top half of the rear endpapers separating, showing netting, the rear board still soundly attached. A Very Good copy.

This seventh revised edition has a long chapter entitled An Epoch of Advancement (pages 319-386) on her life since, also dealing with the military bases and schools of Indian education. Besides additional photographs of the sites, there is a photograph of Marpiyahdinape and Chetanmaza taken July 27, 1896. A very good copy bound in brown pictorial gilt cloth, spine lettering gilt light wear to corners and spine ends.
