He traveled throughout the West in the employ of there American Fur Company. He explored what is now Yellowstone National Park in 1834. For understanding the Mountain Man era, Ferris is very important. He records day to day activities of the trappers and traders. His narrative is clear and straight forward, he provides vivid descriptions of what he sees and experiences.
