Né à Fribourg, 1830 - Berlin 1867 (à 36ans) - Arrivé à Paris, il se fait peu à peu connaître avec des recueils de poésie: En causant avec la Lune en 1851 et Voyages aux Pays du C?ur deux ans plus tard. Il écrit beaucoup dans les journaux de l'époque: essais, poèmes, nouvelles. Arsène Houssaye le prend un temps sous son aile, et le décrit comme un des littéraires les plus lunatiques qu'il ait rencontrés. Il quitte Paris en 1854-1855, et voyage en Belgique et en Allemagne, avant de revenir en Suisse. Ses dernières années sont mal connues. Belle lettre du jeune Eggis, vingt ans, à Philarète Chasles (1798-1873), alors professeur au Collège de France, donnant un cours sur la poésie allemande et anglaise, afin de lui demander de lui fournir un certificat d?assiduité à son cours. Après avoir longuement expliqué son départ de Suisse, à pieds, et son arrivée à Paris, pauvre mais « riche d?illusions », il explique que ce certificat lui permettra d?obtenir une bourse de Fribourg pour la publication de son premier livre. Il s?agit de En causant avec la Lune. On savait déjà qu?Eggis avait entrepris des démarches auprès de Chasles, mais elles seraient restées sans réponse (voir Institut Fribourgeois d?Héraldique et de Généalogie, Bulletin n°43, décembre 2010, p.14).
