Numerous illustrations. Large 8vo. Original green pictorial cloth in gilt and blind. xvi, 256pp. London, Originally commissioned to complete the Patagonian survey begun by H.M.S. Beagle, this survey charted the approaches to the Fijian group, and made an extensive study of north west Australian coastal waters. H.M.S. Alert (Capt. Sir George Nares) was in the event only asked to accomplish the first two of these objectives. After their successful completion the vessel remained in Sydney for some time before cruising home along the Queensland coast, through the Torres Straits to Port Darwin (these events covered in two chapters) and thence homeward to Singapore, the Seychelles and Mozambique. The author was the expedition's naturalist. Ferguson, 8682.
