Quarter Calf, Speckled Boards. Condition: Very Good. 4to. 25.5 by 20 cm. Two frontises (one with engraving, other hand-colored plate), title, [2], 221, [3] pp. With 50 hand-colored aquatint plates, the most exciting not merely costume but showing military and equestrians on move or in action. (And first frontis is B/W.) Colas 1298. The timing of the publication was significant -- it was the fourth year of the Directoire, and so noted on the title. Revolutionary France drew inspiration from Ancient Rome in terms of its republicanism, its muscular outlook, and its aesthetics (although this was a trend that certainly predated the Revolution). Note that this work is encountered without coloring most often. Moderate wear to the binding, and scattered light foxing and soiling within.
