Davis, an African American author, wrote three books of strong poetry in the 1930s and 1940s while he was a working journalist in Chicago. He moved to Honolulu in 1948 and owned a small wholesale paper company and was heavily involved in leftist organizations. He also wrote a pornographic novel under a pseudonym. Davis is mentioned (as "Frank") in "Dreams of My Father" as someone our former President knew when growing up in Hawaii.
