Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine dj. First Edition. (upholstered floral-pattern cloth, in printed acetate dust jacket) [no discernible wear to book; jacket has a few tiny and unobtrusive scuff marks, but no cracks or tears]. (color and B&W photographs A lavish and attractive volume, essentially a catalogue of the exhibition "Romantic and Glamorous Hollywood Design," presented by the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. As such, the focus of the (admittedly fabulous) photographs is strictly on the costumes themselves, as they appeared in the movies and also in real life -- i.e. there are no reproductions, for instance, of any costume sketches or drawings, and the discussion of the creative process doesn't get much beyond the anecdotal. The book is organized (as was the exhibition itself, presumably) by decades, with each having its "theme" (e.g., "1930s: The Fatal Woman and The Hoofer"). Although the jacket copy pays lip service to "the designers, dressmakers, hairdressers, technicians, and directors who made and selected these stunning clothes," the emphasis throughout is on the performers who wore them -- primarily actresses, of course, although there's an occasional nod to one or another male (Rudolph Valentino, Fred Astaire, and a few others). There's a short section at the back of the book that presents mini-biographies of a couple of dozen of the most famous costume designers, and the text makes use (per the jacket copy) of personal interviews, but as far as in-depth history of movie costume design is concerned, this volume is strictly from coffee-tableland. **** NOTE that additional shipping charges will be requested for international shipping of this heavy book, or for Priority Mail service to U.S. destinations. Hard Cover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. First Edition. First edition. Large quarto in full embroidered silk cloth over padded boards. In a printed clear acrylic dustjacket. Both the book and dust jacket are bright and fine. The publisher's card is still laid in and the book appears to have never been read. A superb copy. From the dustjacket flap: "Dazzling, extravagant costumes and the stars who wore them highlight this first major book on Hollywood costume. 127 extraordinary photographs of actual costumes, 79 in full color, were made especially for this book by fashion photographer Keith Trumbo. Most of these pictures are of costumes assembled for the Metropolitan Museum of Art's record breaking show, "Romantic and Glamorous Hollyood Design", while some were added from other collections. The photographs capture not only the exquisite materials and craftsmanship of the clothes but their aura of glamour and romance. And, in some 200 photographs from the great Hollywood movies and TV shows, the stars are seen wearing these costumes in well-remembered dramatic scenes. Here, too, in pictures and intimate biographies--many based on personal interviews--are the stars themselves from Pickford, Crawford, Garbo, and Hepburn to Garland, Streisand, and Cher, as well as the designers, dressmakers, hairdressers, technicians, and directors who made and selected these stunning clothes--Adrian, Erte, von Stroheim, Minelli, Mackie, Plunkett, and many more. The lively and informative text discloses details of costume production and its fabulous costs (one dress alone cost over 30,000) while guiding the reader through six turbulent decades of movie production from the 1910's to the present. It illuminates the tempermental clashes between stars, directors, and designers and the whole fascinating behind-the-scenes story of the magnificent costumes that adorned Hollywood's most exciting stars. There is an extensive bibliography, descriptions of the costumes, biographies of designers, and an index." See photos. Size: 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall.
