Harper (1843-1871) served with the Pennsylvania 139th Regiment of Volunteers from 1862 until the end of the War. He returned to his education at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, graduating with a degree in Civil Engineering in 1867. After managing an oil refinery, he entered into the mercantile sector, but his success was cut short by death from illness at the young age of 29.

Thomas Liggett was born in County Tyrone, Ireland in 1779 and immigrated to Pennsylvania in 1791. Having apprenticed as a carpenter, he moved to Pittsburgh in 1802 and set up in building operations, simultaneously investing heavily in Pittsburgh real estate.

William Thaw, Sr. (1818 1889) was an American businessman who made his fortune in transportation and banking. Thaw endowed science fellowships at Harvard University and Princeton University and also underwrote the building of the Allegheny Observatory for John Brashear. His son Benjamin Thaw was a member of the South Fork Fishing and Hunting Club. The club, founded by Henry Clay Frick and composed of wealthy Pittsburgh industrialists including Carnegie, Andrew Mellon and Philander Knox, owned the South Fork Dam which collapsed on May 31, 1889 causing the Johnstown Flood. Another son Harry Kendall Thaw (1871-1947) murdered the architect Stanford White, who was having an affair with Thaw's wife.

John Thaw came to Pittsburgh from Philadelphia in order to establish a branch of the United States Bank of Philadelphia. He was associated with that institution for the remainder of his life. His son was William Thaw, Sr. the "genius" banker, transportation executive, and philanthropist. His grandson Benjamin Thaw was a member of the South Fork Fishing and Hunting Club. Francis Herron (1774- 1860) was of Scotch-Irish descent. He studied theology at Dickinson College and was licensed to preach by Carlisle Presbytery Oct. 4, 1797. On his return from a tour into the then western wilds of Pennsylvania and Ohio, Herron preached at Pittsburgh to a congregation of 18 persons in a log structure which occupied the identical ground where the First Presbyterian church-edifice now stands. Returning to the Cumberland Valley, he settled at the Rocky Spring Church, where he served for ten years. On the occasion of a visit to Pittsburgh, Herron was invited to become their pastor, which he accepted, and was admitted to the Redstone Presbytery on June 18, 1811. Through Herron's shrewd management of the Church's resources, the Presbyterian Church embarked on establishing a theological seminary in Allegheny City.

Front and image are clean and nice, back has some soiling and a red mark. Engraved by A. H. Ritchie. James Brown (1780-1874) immigrated to America from Ireland. He moved with his employer from Brooklyn to Pittsburgh where they established a confectionery business. When his brother joined him, they established a dry goods business which was very successful. In addition he partnered with James Varner in brewing ale for 50 years. Brown was one of the incorporators of the Bank of Pittsburgh and was a large investor in real estate.

White (1853- ) was born in McKeesport, PA and was a successful physician in that town for many years. Dr. White was President of the McKeesport Light Company and of the Black Oil Company, and owner of the White's Opera House. White was also the vice-president of the Bank of McKeesport which began business in 1887 under a charter originally granted to the Shoe and Leather Bank of Pittsburgh.

White (1826- ) was born in Ireland to a farming family. He preferred a more urban life and repaired to Dublin where he learned tailoring. Seeking the most productive location in which to practice his trade, White immigrated to Philadelphia, then to Pittsburgh and finally settled in McKeesport, Pennsylvania. His success in the merchant tailoring business enable him to make very astute real estate investments rendering him the largest real estate owner in McKeesport. He was president of the People's Bank of McKeesport and a director of the First National Bank of McKeesport.

Henry Irvin Gourley was born in Juniata County, Pennsylvania in 1838 to a peasant family. In 1876 he was elected to the City Council. Mayor Gourley took office in 1890 and his reputation for hard and honest work served him well in city hall. His term was noted for the trust it engendered in Pittsburgh residents. After he left office he served as city controller before his death in 1899.

William Hartman was born in Hesse-Darmstadt, Germany in 1822. He was apprenticed and worked as a journeyman in the shoemaker's trade until he was 24. In 1846 he married Catherine Steinman and then immigrated to America, eventually settling in McKeesport, Pennsylvania in 1858. He made his fortune in the retail shoe and boot business and erected a large business block in Mckeesport known as Hartman's Block.

He immigrated to America and settled in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania in 1853. In 1858 Simon married Maria Voelp with whom he had ten children. Having learned carpentry in Germany, he worked at that trade, eventually setting up his own business. He was very successful as a contractor, builder and owner of a planing mill.

At an early age he worked with General Dan Taylor on the enlargement of the Morris Canal; then under Major Moor on the NY & Erie Railroad. In 1850 he became assistant engineer of the Ohio & Pennsylvania Railroad. From 1858 to 1861 he served as assistant clerk of the state senate of Pennsylvania. In 1859 he was appointed engineer of the Lawrenceville Passenger Railway; then the Manchester Passenger Railway between Pittsburgh and Allegheny. He was also an engineer or officer with each of the following: Pittsburgh, Fort Wayne and Chicago Railway Co., the Marietta and Cincinnati Railroad and the Lawrence Railroad Company.

Thomas Bartholomew McClurg was born in Pittsburgh in 1819, the eldest son of Joseph McClurg, thus recipient of all the advantages which family wealth affords. After completing his education he took over management of the family's large estate.

Graham Scott was born in Mercer, Pennsylvania and moved to Pittsburgh in 1836. He first engaged in the house and sign painting trade, then took a position with William Dilworth, Jr in the lumber business. He later turned his attention to estate management, real estate and insurance.

Booth was born in 1836 in Cheshire, England where early in life he worked in a cotton factory. He ran away from home in 1854 and came to America settling in Pittsburgh where he learned the bricklayer's trade. In 1878 he established the firm of Booth & Flinn and began the manufacture of bricks. In addition to street paving, they built the Citizens' Traction Railway and the Central. With his great financial success, Booth became a director of the Commercial National Bank, the Commonwealth Trust Company and the Oakland Savings and Trust Company. He was also director of the National Fire-Proofing Company.

After several years in Titusville, Pennsylvania, Sadler sought a greater field of operation and moved to Pittsburgh in 1874, continuing his medical practice, with an expanded emphasis on ear and eye surgery.
