Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. A Fine tight copy in a Near Fine price-clipped dust jacket with just a touch of edge wear. Before Elizabeth David died in 1992 she and her editor, Jill Norman, had begun work on a volume of The Best of but then her health deteriorated and the project was shelved. The idea was revived in 1996 when chefs and writers and Elizabeth s many friends, were invited to select their favourite articles and recipes. Some sent notes explaining their choice, others provided an anecdote or a recollection about her, others sent lists of recipes they had been using for years. This book is the fruit of that harvest of recommendations and the names of the contributors, who number among them some of our finest food writers such as Simon Hopkinson, Alice Waters, Sally Clarke, Richard Olney, Paul Levy and Anne Willan, appear after the pieces they had chosen along with their notes. The extracts and recipes which make up South Wind Through the Kitchen are drawn from all Elizabeth David s books, namely A Book of Mediterranean Food, French Country Cooking, Italian Food, Sumer Cooking, French Provincial Cooking, Spices, Salt and Aromatics in the English Kitchen, English Bread and Yeast Cookery, An Omelette and a Glass of Wine, and Harvest of the Cold Months. There are over 200 recipes in the book organised around courses and ingredients such as eggs and cheese, fish and shellfish, meat, poultry and game, vegetables, pasta, pulses and grains, sauces, sweet dishes and cakes, preserves, and bread, all interspersed with extracts and articles making it a delightful compendium to dip into as well as cook from.

Book First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Fine. 1st Edition. A Fine tight copy in Fine illustrated glossy boards without dust jacket as issued. Legendary cook Elizabeth David is the woman who changed the face of British cooking. She introduced a dreary post-war Britain to the sun-drenched culinary delights of the Mediterranean; to foods like olive oil, pasta, and garlic, to fresh herbs like basil and to vegetables like zucchini and eggplant foods that have become the staples of our diets today. Her recipes brought color and life into kitchens everywhere, yet her books never contained any photographs. Published to celebrate the 60th anniversary of Elizabeth's first book, her instant classic Mediterranean Food, At Elizabeth David's Table has twelve chapters guiding the reader from tasty soups and starters, through to meat, fish and desserts. There are also sections on successful bread making, as well as more extravagant dishes, interspersed throughout with some of Elizabeth's short essays from how to cook fast and fresh' using store-bought and pantry ingredients, to evocative portraits of French and Italian markets.

Hard Cover. Dust Jacket Condition: Dust Jacket. First Edition. (London: John Lehmann 1950). First UK Edition. Publisher's original pink tweed cloth, backstrip blocked in brown and lettered in gilt. Boards bright and clean. A former owner's name and contemporary date to the front free end-paper otherwise a VG++ copy in like price-clipped dustwrapper (with no wear, tears or pieces missing) and which is the nicest example that we have seen in the last 20+ years. A lovely copy. The first edition was printed in tiny numbers and is seldom found in collectable condition (as this is). The dustwrapper is notable for its stunning wrap-around John Minton illustration who also provided further black and white illustrations inside the text. # 30 in the Guardian's list of 100 non-fiction books described by them as a landmark recipe book (a horrified reaction to post-war rationing) and "one woman's response to the challenges of peacetime, a macedoine of elegy, joie de vivre requiem and manifesto. Mrs David (as she was known) never over-egged her prose, but her recipes were rich with loving evocations of rare and spicy ingredients. There are, she writes, endless varieties of currants and raisins, figs from Smyrna on long strings, dates, almonds, pistachios and pine kernel nuts, dried melon seeds and sheets of apricot paste which is dissolved in water to make a cooling drink.". Hard Cover. Dust Jacket Condition: Dust Jacket. First Edition. First UK Edition. SIGNED LETTER FROM THE AUTHOR LAID IN. Publisher's turquoise boards with gilt lettering to the spine. A near fine copy in like dustwrapper priced 12/6 net to the inside flap (as called for). The dustwrapper and internal illustrations designed by Adrian Daintrey. The dustwrapper is the nicest example that I have encountered of this fragile first edition. The orange portions of the spine are faded to a lighter hue and the spine tips are minisculy rubbed but with no loss. A super copy. Laid in is hand-written card from the Author from her 24 Halsey Street address and dated August 1st 1989. "Dear Ron [Latham], Thank you for a gorgeous treat - Nico is certainly in splendid form and his cooking is quite remarkable. He is inventive. I don't think Michelin will like his Indian touches, but perhaps he's decided not to worry about them any more. Last time I dined there, a couple of weeks ago, he was telling some characters that they were very welcome to enjoy a meal but he did not repeat not wish to be included in any guide -- Anyway, I enjoyed our lunch enormously, and I hope you'll allow me yo invite you and Janet to a lunch before long. Love Elizabeth" Did you see this show at the National Gallery? It was dazzling --. The hand-written card is written on the verso of a National Gallery post-card that illustrates "Still Life with Oranges and Walnuts by Luis MELENDEZ (1716-1780). The card is laid in a hard-written envelope also in Elizabeth David's hand. NB: The reference to "NICO" by Elizabeth David is likely to be a reference to Nico Ladenis (a self-taught chef of Greek descent from Tanganyika) who opened his bistro-style restaurant in Pimlico, Simply Nico, in 1989. He earned 3 Michelin Stars and was awarded 10 out of ten by the Good Food Guide. Photographs/sans available upon request.
