First Edition
First edition. 4to. Contemporary vellum, some browing here and there with toward the end of the volume some worming mostly marginal but touching the text (hardly any loss) of about 20ll. 10, 264ll. Genova, Rare first edition of this work which Brunet calls ?ouvrage curieux, qui a beaucoup de succès dans le temps? Written to celebrate the unification of the crowns of Portugal and Castille, this comprehensive history of the Portuguese empire includes a chronology of Portuguese kings since 1090. The first book mentions Columbus and the Portuguese settlement in Brazil and also reports on Portuguese activities in Africa and India. In addition, the role of the Jesuits is discussed at length. It also discusses China, Japan, France and the Low Countries. Brunet believes that the name of Conestaggio was a pseudonym and that the work was written by Juan de Silva, condé de Portalegre, who had accompanied Dom Sebastian to Africa as Spanish Ambassador. Adams C2502; Brunet II, 217; not in Borba.

Hard Cover. Condition: Good. 1589. In folio [xxv], 126, [i] folhas. In folio [xxv], 126, [i] folios. Magnificent contemporary full velum binding with raised bands and blind tools on spine and boards. Example with large ex-libris of Ferdinand Hoffmann, Freiherr von Strechau und Grünbühel, nobleman of Styria (Austria), in front pastedown and with his Super-libris mounted on the front board. Illustrated with two open engravings on copper plates depicting the Battle of Alcácer Quibir and the Naval Battle in the Azores. Fleuron in the centre of the title page. Very important work for the history and iconography of King Sebastião's reign and the beginning of the Dual Monarchy. Rare 1st edition of the German translation (unknown from Inocêncio, José dos Santos and many other bibliographers) by Albrecht Fürst of the famous work Dell'unione del regno di Portogallo alla corona di Castiglia . Genoa, Girolamo Bartoli. 1585. This work has had many editions, having been edited several times in Italy: Genoa 1589; Venice 1592; Milan 1616; Verona 1642. It has also been translated into the main European languages: French, 1595, re-edited in1601; English by Edward Blount, 1600; Latin 1602; Spanish by por Luís de Bavia, 1610 (who changed the parts where Conestaggio shows hostility against Spain); and again into French in 1680, reprinted in 1695. The author describes the way the king of Spain, Filipe II, became the king Filipe I of Portugal. Conestaggio narrates the events that led up to it, mainly the crusade in Africa of king D. Sebastião and his death in the battle of Alcácer Quibir; the battle of Alcântara between the troops of D. António and of the Duque of Alba; and the defeat of the English fleet in the Azores. The author started his business in Lisbon from 1576 to 1582, thus being a privileged witness of the historical events he describes. As for the battle of Alcácer Quibir, it may have been based on information from D. João da Silva, who accompanied D. Sebastião into battle as ambassador of king Filipe II. This led to some, wrongfully, saying that the author was D. João. The authorship of this work to D. João da Silva, 4th Count of Portalegre, made by Inocêncio from some vague references by D. Francisco Manuel de Melo and Gracián is misconc.
