Nineteenth century navy morocco, gilt-lettered, elaborately decorated in gilt, all edges gilt, marbled endpapers. Child studied in Germany under Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm. His intent with these volumes, and his subsequent "English and Scottish Popular Ballads" in 10 volumes (1882-1898), was to document the oral tradition antecedent to written literature. "Rhythmical speech was the world's first great medium of communication of complex ideas, and there were certainly media men of astonishing skill long before anyone on earth learned how to write." (David E. Bynum, "Child's Legacy Enlarged", in the "Harvard Library Bulletin" for July, 1974). A beautiful set, very little wear, spines slightly darkened.
