One page, cr. 8vo, fold marks, very good condition."I am sorry to hear that you are still l;aid up and unable to return to the House [Parliament] but you are quitre right to take no risks by returning too early. I hope that you will not think of coming back until your doctor advises that it is safe for you to do so. | There is only one suggestion that I should like to make. The Questions addressed to the Foreign Office are usually of some importance and it does not seem desirable that they should be handed over to one of the Whips to answer. It would be much better if they could be entrusted to one of the Under-Secretaries in the House and I should be grateful if you would endeavour to arrange for this to be done. Harmsworth has added some cryptic symbols "CH [?] | 2 | vgn [?]" in a pencilled diamond.

3pp, 12mo. Bifolium. In fair condition, lightly aged and creased. Folded twice. The letter, which deals with domestic matters, but has some interest considering the writer's father's views on land reform, is written a year after Chamberlain's return from his studies in Germany, where he had been alarmed by the rise in Prussian militarism, and with him on the verge of his entry into politics in the footsteps of his father Joseph Chamberlain. (He was also the older half-brother of the future Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain.) It begins: 'Dear Mr. Kynnersley, | I cannot see my way to parting with a piece of the meadow as wished by your tenant, & I still think that his wants would really be met by an allotment. They are within half a minutes walk of his cottage & some of the present holders grow roses & other flowers on them.' Chamberlain's offer is for the tenant to consider, and he only made it 'because I was anxious to meet your wishes as far as possible'.

Wilshire, 'Prospective Coalition Candidate Thornbury Division', with Sir George Davies in support. The meeting ends with Chamberlain replying to the motion: 'That this meeting cordially thanks the Chancellor of the Exchequer for his attendance and speech this evening and expresses its continued confidence in the Prime Minister and in the policy of His Majesty's Government'. Chamberlain was Chancellor of the Exchequer for the second and last time in the Lloyd George coalition, between 10 January 1919 and 1 April 1921.

orig.boards Minor rubbing. Some inked writing on dustwrapper. VG., dustwrapper. 22x14cm, viii,548 pp, Series: Camden Fifth Series, Vol. 5. "This book is a collection of the diary letters of Austen Chamberlain from 1916 to 1937. These letters provide a valuable insight into the political life of one of the leading Conservative politicians of the inter-war period, and constitute a detailed record of Conservative and national politics at this time. They provide particularly valuable personal accounts of key events such as the negotiations of the Irish Treaty in 1921, the troubles leading to the Carlton Club revolt of October 1922, the Locarno agreements of 1925, the leadership crisis of 1930--31, and the backbench campaign against the German threat in the 1930s. Chamberlain felt free to express his most candid feelings and emotions in the privacy of these diary letters and, as a result, they throw much valuable light upon arguably one of the most misjudged politicians of the age, and one who has certainly been overshadowed by his more famous father and half- brother" - Publisher's description. On one side of a foolscap (32.5 x 20 cm) page. Eighteen lines. On aged and foxed paper with chipping at head and foot. Chamberlain was Rector between 1925 and 1928. Begins: 'Amidst the preoccupations which assail the delegate of one Nation in an Assembly of nearly forty-seven, my thoughts turn lovingly to the simpler duties of a Lord Rector who deals only with Four Nations and has the honour to be the chosen representative of them all.' The 'privilege' is 'doubly dear' to Chamberlain when he recalls 'the fact that more than twenty years ago the choice of the students of that day fell upon my father', who 'valued the honour which your predecessors conferred upon him'. Ends 'May the University flourish for ever!'.

"Some years ago when the B'ham University was founded I undertook to canvass the Members for Midland constituencies, served by the University, for support & received promises of sums ranging from £2000 to £100. | The University is now making a fresh appeal & I have undertaken the same task. I venture to ask you [.] if you will kindly help as your predecessor did. | " He is sending a copy of the printed appeal so that he can assess what has been done and "what remains to do". He lists the donations from himself (£250) and his father (£1000), and J.W. WIlson, "the only other member to whom I have yet spoken, £105". He says that subscriptions can be made in instalments. "I hope you may be willing to support this great institution of the Midlands & that you will not think that in a non-political matter our party differences disqualify me for applying to you." Cecil Harmsworth adds a short note in pencil at the head of the letter: "52.10 this year (1909) & a similar amount next year 'if I can afford it' | CBH".
