Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. Jacket by John Minton (illustrator). 1st Edition. First published in the UK in 1950, this is a second impression of 1951. Some edge wear to top and bottom of jacket, some slight chipping to top and bottom of spine, some slight overall browning to John Minton's fabulous retro jacket. Not price clipped (9s 6d), no inscriptions, internally clean tight and square, overall a vg++ copy. 256pp. As well as the elegant squares of Bloomsbury, Ivan Ginsberg walks the decaying back streets of post war Soho, haunting cafes and pubs in company with an array of bohemian characters. As he wanders, his hopes of literary success seem further away than ever. With no capital and no backing, will he ever manage to produce 'Scamp', the literary magazine which gives this book its title? The author Roland Camberton (1921-1965), was a somewhat mysterious figure. His real name was Henry Cohen, though his family also knew him as Harry. He won the 1951 Somerset Maugham Award, given to authors under the age of 35, for his debut novel 'Scamp', although the book had earlier received a merciless (and malicious) review in the Times Literary Supplement upon publication in late 1950. 'The book is written from the standpoint of the 'bum': that bearded and corduroyed figure who may be seen crouching over a half of bitter in the corner of a Bloomsbury 'pub'; it is ostensibly concerned with the rise and fall of a short lived literary review, but Mr. Camberton, who appears to be devoid of any narrative gift, makes this an excuse for dragging in disconnectedly and to little apparent purpose a series of thinly disguised local or literary celebrities'. Perhaps the reviewer was one of those so unkindly caricatured? The following year Cohen published his only other novel 'Rain on the Pavements' which reflects Jewish life in Hackney during the thirties. This book received a much more positive review (from Julian Symons). Camberton then vanished off the literary map and does not appear to have published any books after 1951. Indeed, few details of his life are available. The writer Iain Sinclair has described him in an interview as a 'Hackney writer', and Cohen did, indeed attend Hackney Downs School (formerly The Grocers' Company's School) until 1938 and two poems by him were published in the School Magazine (The Review). He was buried under his birth name, Henry Cohen in Rainham Jewish Cemetery in 1965, leaving a daughter. An extremely scarce book, even in this second impression.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. 8vo., orange publisher's cloth, with painted green labels decorated in gilt to spine; complete in the original publisher's dust jacket designed by John Minton (9s. 6d. net); pp. [iv], 5-256, endpapers lightly offset; pages evenly, and marginally, toned, a little spotting to the half-title; else a very good copy with slight compression to extremities, the jacket retaining much of its brightness, light nicks and chips to spine ends; verso a little browned; ever-so-slightly dulled along the spine. First edition of Camberton's first novel. Scamp is set in Bloomsbury, Soho, and Fitzrovia, and tells the story of Ivan Ginsberg, who occupies at rat-infested bathroom-kitchen attempting to write stories for a stillborn literary magazine. The novel received mixed reviews upon publication, with Maclaren-Ross claiming that its author 'appeared to be devoid of any narrative gift'. It was, however, awarded the Somerset Maugham prize the following year. On meeting his benefactor, Camberton later reported "He asked if I wanted tea or whisky. And I said whisky. Maugham said, 'That's right, good show! I'm going to have both.' And then we put English fiction to the sword." Camberton, whose real name was Henry Cohen, wrote just one other novel, Rain on the Pavements before he disappeared, both from the literary scene, and from everyday life. In an article written for the Guardian, the writer Iain Sinclar claims that he died young, and reveals the existence of an estranged daughter. Sinclair is almost single-handedly responsible for the renewed interest in his writing, which gathered further momentum in 2021, the centenary of the author's birth.

Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. A First UK printing published by John Lehmann in 1951. The author's scarce second book. The Book is in near Fine condition. The boards are clean with just some light fading and pushing to the spine ends. There is some mild toning to the text block with light offsetting of the end-papers. The book is tight, clean and free from markings and erasures. The WRAPPER is complete and is in near FINE condition. It bears the correct price of '10s 6d'. It has some very minor edge-wear with associated creasing and rubbing to the tips of the spine. The spine is slightly toned but this does not detract from the pictorial wraparound design. The rear panel has mild age related markings but less so than usually encountered. The wonderful period wrapper artwork is by the renowned artist John Minton and looks stunning in the Brodart protective cover. John Minton was commissioned to design the wrappers for both of Camberton's books. The book has been warmly inscribed and signed by the author on the upper front pastedown to J.B. Priestley: 'To J.B.Priestley, with admiration and gratitude, And with very best wishes - from Roland Camberton, November 1951'. The book also bears the personal library bookplate of J.B.Priestley to the front pastedown. Priestley was a great supporter of Camberton and was instrumental in gaining recognition for Camberton's first novel 'Scamp': 'Roland Camberton can write, and in 'Scamp' he has produced one of the best novels I have read since the war'. Scamp went on to win the Somerset Maugham Literary award for that year. Camberton disappeared into literary obscurity after publishing only two books. There has been renewed interest in Roland Camberton recently resulting in both his novels now being back in print. The author Iain Sinclair has particularly taken an interest and written on Camberton and his books. A significant association copy. Collectible. Ashton Rare Books welcomes direct contact. Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. The First UK printing published by John Lehmann, London in 1950. The BOOK is in Very Good condition. There is some pushing to the spine ends with some light bumping to the lower corners. Some ghosting to the orange colouring of the spine but the green faux label remains bright. The covers are lightly marked in places. There is light toning of the text block and end-papers with some slight creasing to the pages in places. A couple of pages have some small splash marks to the page edges. The WRAPPER is complete and is in near Fine condition. A little toning to the spine with some mild edge-wear affecting the spine ends. The edges are a little nicked with one small closed tear to the upper cover. The rear panel remains remarkably clean for its age. The JOHN MINTON designed wrapper artwork looks very striking in the removable Brodart archival protector. The wrapper is incredibly scarce to find in any condition and this is certainly one of the nicest examples that we have ever handled to date. One of the iconic wrapper designs of the 1950s! The book has been Inscribed and Signed by the Author to the title page: 'To Opal, from Roland Camberton with best wishes and affection, October-1950'. Roland Camberton (aka Henry Cohen) wrote only two novels before disappearing into relative obscurity. This was despite winning the prestigious Somerset Maugham Award for the title 'Scamp'. The author Iain Sinclair has been largely responsible for championing the recent revival in Camberton's works which are now back in print. A highly collectible and very scarce title to find with such attributes. Ashton Rare Books welcomes direct contact. Signed by Author(s).
