Cloth. Condition: Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Fair. First. xiii, 421pp., index, biblio., notes. Previous owner's name inside front, signed by author on title page. Book itself would have been fine except for some damage - which can only be described as if it was chewed - to the bottom front spine corner, touching an area of about 1.5 by 1.5 cm. This event also damaged the DJ in the same spot, and there is some sun, a tear to the rear, and other edge wear on the jacket. "Throughout the period 1833-1889, the Church was prophetically engaged in giving England a new social gospel. This study shows that the Church saw the great danger of class warfare in England and, as part of a deliberate policy of reconciliation, sought to install in the middle class the spirit of noblesse oblige which the Victorians assumed and the aristocracy still maintained." Size: 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. Signed by Author(s). Book.
