2pp., 12mo. Bifiolium. Mimeographed document in purple ink. The date, Ramsay's name and Bonney's signature are added in Bonney's autograph. The Association's council, 'acting under the powers conferred upon them by the General Committee in accordance with their Report, have appointed a Committee [.] to carry into effect the recommendations of the portion of the Council Report accepted by the General committee'. A 'List of the Committee' is on the second page, the eleven members headed by 'Mr. H. G. Fordham (Secretary)' and featuring 'Mr. Francis Galton' and 'Mr. A. Ramsay'. Laid down beneath the list is a printed slip reading: 'That the Council be empowered to appoint a Committee, as recommended in their report adopted by the General Committee on August 23, in order to draw up suggestions upon methods of more systematic observation and plans of operation for local societies, together with a more uniform mode of publication of he results of their work. It is recommended that this Committee should draw up a list of local societies which publish their proceedings.' Ramsay, a geologist, was the editor of the short-lived periodical 'The Scientific Roll'.

Two pages, 12mo, bifolium, some foxing, text clear and complete. His current engagements mean he can't accept hospitality. As regards the boulder either [?] Mathers or the Rev. H.W. Crossley of Birmingham would be able to tell you whether it were a mass of Criffel or Eskdale granite. Sometimes also rocks stray from the Charnwood Forest region - Has Mr T.N. Hutchinson of Rugby seen the boulder. He might be able to help you. [.]". Hutchinson published on Geology of Charnwood Forest (Quarterly Journal).

See Bonney's entry in the Oxford DNB. 4pp, 12mo. Bifolium. In fair condition, lightly aged and worn. The recipient is not named. It is unfortunate that the subject of the letter is not stated. Against the charge of misogyny, it should be noted that Bonney 'had the reputation of being a hard teacher, but also a generous man', and that he could equally well have written in the same way to a man he considered equally ill-equipped for a theological task. (He was active as a theologian, wrote several collection of sermons, and had been a preacher at the Chapel Royal, Whitehall.) The letter begins: 'Dear Madam | The question in your postscript is so vague and general in form that it would be impossible for me to undertake to answer it, except with the same vagueness. But, as I said before, I cannot spare the time for correspondence of that kind.' In reply to her question whether she has 'done any good by writing to the speaker at the Church Congress' he replies: 'As I have not been there and have not read much about it, I cannot tell, but must frankly say that I do not expect it.' His view of such speakers is that they are 'for the most part men who are likely to have thought upon and know more of the subject than you can possibly do'. He continues: 'After what you told me some time ago about yourself and your occupation, I must say that I fear you have taken up matters far too difficult and complicated for you to deal with.' He advises her 'to turn your thoughts to less ambitious work, to consult the clergy of the church which you attend, on whom you have, in consequence, some claim and see if they cannot put you in the way of being useful to others in a less ambitious but more practical sphere'.

4pp., 12mo. Bifolium. Very good, on lightly-aged paper. He begins by commending the recipient's 'interesting paper': 'Of the justice of your remarks there can of course be no doubt, and even the small amount of knowledge that I have been able to acquire of the nature of rocks, has for some time past convinced me of the importance of what you '. He explains that he did his best 'in getting specimens of the Lafoten rocks, but the tast was very difficult and very unsuccessful, owing to the great hardness of the rocks. Quarries of course were absent'. When he 'wrote a short paper which I sent to the Geological Society I had not got book - I have since looked at the part about the Lafotens but it appears to me that he is by no means clear about the nature of the rocks there, although it is evident that he regarded many parts as metamorphic. Forbes calls mempanite and Mr Dahl in conversatino with myself maintained that they were, so knowing that he was a geologist of some repute and finding it almost impossible to get hold of Norwegian books I concluded that the opinion expressed by Travellers was generally held'. He concludes by stating that 'Since asking the question about Dolomite' he has 'come upon Mr Sorby's paper. [Henry Clifton Sorby (1826-1908)] He is doubtless right - Mr Hunts speculations seem to me very wild.'.

2pp., 12mo. In good condition, lightly aged. A tantalizing extract from a correspondence. He begins: 'I doubt whether domestic service, as a rule, is quite the state of slavery you depict, but, as I said before, the question which you ask me is less simple than you appear to think and I can only say that every employer is bound to remember that those he (or she) employs has wants, bodily and spiritual, very similar to his own.' He concludes the letter, and the correspondence, by apologising that he 'cannot continue to write on the subject'.

WorldCat) Walton, landscape painter, also illustrated seven books by his friend T. G. Bonney, including The Peaks and Valleys of the Alps (1867), The Coast of Norway (1871), and Welsh Scenery (1875). See ODNB for a full Bio. Bonney, geologist, though said to be of indifferent health at times, was a very active alpine mountaineer and carried out numerous field investigations, even into old age. He died at his home, in Cambridge, unmarried, on 9 December 1923. His autobiography, Memories of a Long Life (1921), says little about Bonney's geological work, but records his impressive alpine achievements, gives fascinating insights into Cambridge life in the nineteenth century, and reveals the author as a tremendous trencherman with a seemingly inordinate interest in food. See ODNB for a full Bio.
