Book First Edition
Trade Paperback. Condition: Fine. Assumed First Addition. 88 Pages. Glossy covers to a book in very good condition. No defects noted. Balloons to Bombers is the colorful history of aviation in Albuquerque from the first balloon ascension through the end of World War II. Local aviation began with bartender Park Van Tassel, who daringly piloted his hydrogen balloon City of Albuquerque on a flight from downtown to Old Town in 1882. Local residents Joseph Blondin and Roy Stamm followed this historic flight by several ascensions of longer duration, one of which was witnessed by President Taft in 1909. Early biplanes soon supplanted balloons. Charles Walsh gave the first demonstration of heavier-than-air flight at the 1911 Territorial Fair in a Curtiss Model D biplane. Following flights by other barnstormers, Frank Speakman and William Franklin opened the Albuquerque Airport on the East Mesa in 1928, ushering in commercial and private aviation. In the 1930s Albuquerque assumed importance as a hub of southwestern aviation. TWA built a new airport on the West Mesa which became the center for commercial air traffic. In 1939 the city built a new adobe airport terminal on the East Mesa and the focus of activities shifted east again. Shortly before the war the U.S. Army built a flying field east of the new municipal airport. After the commencement of hostilities it became a bomber crew training base graduating thousands of airmen and mechanics for combat missions.
