The Pictorial History was first published immediately after the Civil War to provide an authoritative account of the war. The title page of the book: Harper s Pictorial History of the Civil War by Alfred H Guernsey and Henry M Alden, Chicago, The Puritan Press Co . At bottom of the title page: "Copyrighted 1866 by Harper & Brothers; copyrighted 1894 by Alfred H. Guernsey and Henry M. Alden; copyrighted 1894 by McDonnell Bros." Harper's Magazine was noted for its outstanding coverage of the Civil War. The pages of the book are filled with illustrations, maps, biographies and stories gathered from the pages of the magazine. ----PETERSBURG: By early 1865 Union forces had fortified positions on the east, south and west sides of Petersburg. The bombardment and attacks that followed were enough to convince General Lee of the hopelessness of the situation and he ordered his troops to abandon Petersburg on April 2nd.
