About this Item
The artist Tsukioka Yoshitoshi (1839-1892), perhaps most famous for his violent muzan-e ( bloody prints ), also created a wide range of non-violent works from historical paintings to paintings of beautiful women in the middle of his career. This colourful nishiki-e was published just before the start of a new year and is one of the rare comic prints from Yoshitoshi s mid-career period. The triptych was based on the fact that it has long been said in Japan that it is lucky to see the Seven Gods of Fortune , whose legend has been passed down since ancient times, in a New Year's dream. Triptych, complete. Washi repair to upper right corner of each print. Lightly soiled. Overall very good. Each print measures 37 x 25 cm. Text in Japanese. . Seller Inventory # 944
