About this Item
Approximate Overall Size: 6 X 9 1/2 inches CONDITION: Book Plate - Excellent Condition. As Scanned. German Text. PHOTOGRAPH OF THE SUN'S SURFACE ON OCTOBER 1, 1895. PHOTOGRAPH OF THE SUN'S CORONA DURING THE TOTAL SOLAR ECLIPSE ON APRIL 16, 1893 . The Sun's corona is the outermost layer of the Sun's atmosphere, extending millions of kilometers into space, and is usually only visible during a total solar eclipse. On April 16, 1893, a total solar eclipse provided an opportunity for astronomers and scientists to observe and study the Sun's corona.During a total solar eclipse, the Moon passes directly between the Earth and the Sun, temporarily blocking the Sun's bright photosphere. This allows the much fainter corona to be seen, appearing as a ghostly halo or aura of white light surrounding the Moon. The corona's appearance can vary significantly from one eclipse to another, depending on the Sun's activity cycle. The total solar eclipse on April 16, 1893, was visible from parts of South America, including Chile and Argentina. The event attracted the attention of astronomers and scientists who traveled to the region to observe and document the eclipse. They used various instruments, such as telescopes and cameras, to study the Sun's corona and other phenomena associated with the eclipse. The observations made during the 1893 total solar eclipse contributed to the understanding of the Sun's corona and its relationship with solar activity. The corona's structure and appearance can provide valuable information about the Sun's magnetic field, solar wind, and other solar phenomena.Wilhelm Oswald Lohse (February 13,1845 ? May 14,1915) was a German astronomer. He first worked at the Botham Observatory, and starting in 1874 at the Potsdam Astrophysical Observatory, being its Chief Astronomer at the time of his death.
