Millouin. Canard siffleur. A Pochard and a Whistling Duck. An original hand-coloured copper plate engraving. Drawn and engraved by Francois-Nicolas Martinet (1760-1800). From The Ornithologia, sive synopsis methodica by Mathurin Jaques Brisson of 1760. Signed in the plate lower left. Size of sheet: 14" x 10". Size of image: 11.25" x 9.25". Francois-Nicolas Martinet was a French engineer, engraver and naturalist. He engraved plates for numerous works on natural history but he specialized in ornithology. Most notable are these produced for The Ornithologia. Condition: Fine. The engraving is exceptionally clean and fresh. It is marked where it would have been folded in the book. There is a faint shadow of the main image on the surround to the left. Also one spot of foxing. These flaws do not affect he main image. Seller Inventory # 001022
