About this Item
YEATS, W. B. "The Lover Tells of the Rose in His Heart." Churchtown, Dundrum: The Cuala Press, Nd (Pre 1945). Original print of the poem, designed, illustrated and lettered by the artist Charles Braithwaite; with hand-coloured drop caps and border. Printed on hand-made Irish paper. Sheet size: 34.5 x 27cm. Small crease in top left hand corner, and 5mm tear in right hand edge, which would be hidden if mounted; faint variation in colour where the print has previously been placed unattached in a frame, otherwise a fine copy suitable for remounting and framing. Note: This print was purchased from Whyte's Auctioneers, Dublin, Ireland where the Provenance was given as: Collection of Lady Gregory, Coole Park, and other sources; Private collection. "The Lover Tells of the Rose in His Heart" was written in 1892. In the poem Yeats presents two distinct visions of Ireland in images meant to evoke a modern, Anglicized nation in contrast to and lacking the essence of the true Ireland found in the natural, eternal world.
