Simpson, MD, was an artist, printer, and owner of The Blackwood Press, which he founded in 1956. He lived in California cities, such as Placerville and Sacramento, and Beaverton, Oregon. This print is part of a 1972-1988 series depicting Northern California plants or flowers. All of the prints in the series are limited edition; most came in editions of eighty or fewer. As per the tradition of labeling prints, this print includes the title, artist's signature, date, and edition number handwritten in pencil below the printed image. The following are the handwritten portions of the print: "Dogwood; [Simpson's signature]; Jan[19]84; 53/69." The following is the artist's statement Simpson made while living in Placerville: "Linoleum Prints: The flowers are drawn from nature, mostly near my home in the Sierra Nevada, and then transferred to ordinary floor linoleum. The parts not wanted in the print are removed with linoleum cutting tools and the remaining piece of linoleum tacked to a wooden block. The block is locked into a frame, the chase, and is then ready for the press. Printing inks are mixed for the desired color. Where colors are compatible (as yellow plus blue gives green) the entire flower, with leaves and stems, is printed, e.g., in yellow. The flower itself is then cut away and the remaining linoleum is reprinted in blue over the yellow giving green stems and leaves. If colors are not compatible, separate blocks are needed for each color.". Seller Inventory # 021692
