Antique print, titled: 'In carcere eram et venistis ad me.' - The visiting of the prisoners. This edition was printed around 1700, based on the watermark by the Publisher Nicolaes Visscher II (1649-1702). The set is usually published as "Groote Figuer-bijbel"or "Theatrum Biblicum". The Visscher family published these already antique plates from 1649 on. State: Second state of 2 Ref: Hollstein 627 Theatrum Biblicum Engraving on Laid paper. Watermark: Coat of arms of Amsterdam with a lower beam. Made by an anonymous engraver after 'Maerten de Vos'. Maarten de Vos (1532-1603) was an Antwerp painter and draughtsman of the late sixteenth century. His travels to Italy made him adopt the Mannerist style. His designs were very popular and were followed widely. Very good, given age. Large margins. Some foxing. General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling.
