About this Item

Description:

This is an antique photogravure reproduction of "The Madness of Nebucchadnezzar", a painting by Georges Rochegrosse (1859 - 1938), a highly collected 19th French artists, known for his historical and semi-mythical subject matter, frequently within the genre of Orientalism. He was known also for his predilection to paint somewhat macabre scenes, such as this one depicting the great Babylonian king, Nebuchadnezzar crawling around in madness, eating grass. An avenging angel stands upon him with drawn sword. This sad picture is taken from the book of Daniel, 4: 33 (". and he was driven from men, and did eat grass as oxen, and his body was wet with the dew of heaven till his hairs were grown like eagle's feathers, and his nails like bird's claws.") in later verses we read that the king repented and accepted "The King of Heaven". ************************************************ This photogravure is lush in its depictive details. Nebuchadnezzar is crawling on. the ground in a frenzy of madness whilst his court personages look on in horror. An avenging angel, painted so as to seem translucent, but still . mighty and indomitable, stands atop the king who grovels abjectly. The angel holds a drawn sword and seems quite unrelenting. ************************************************ The full size is 7 7/8" x 11 3/8". size of the actual image is 4 5/8" x 7 3/8". ************************************************ CONDITION - GOOD PLUS - This is the original 1887 photogravure. About the edges are various small damp stains and general modest weathering. The furthest inward any of the weathering extends is 3/4 inch (this at the top). the print itself is beautiful : bright and attractive. Put a nice frame about it and it will seem a real treasure.
