About this Item
We offer a pencil signed etching by Marcel Gromaire from his Macbeth portfolio. The plate is 10 ¼ x 8 , signed and editioned 32/60 under the image, housed in a period frame (18 ⅞ x 16 ). The Macbeth series was printed by the Imprimerie Nationale under the direction of the Teriade, in Paris. The book was published by Editions Verve, etchings printed by Raymond Haasen. This illustration of Lady Macbeth alone with a candle ( out, out brief candle ) with layered, jagged, darkened geometry speaks to the themes of order and chaos, power and submission, light and dark. Marcel Gromaire (1892 1971) was born Noyelles-sur-Sambre. He studied law in Paris, where he first became familiar with the artists of Montparnasse. Early on, Gromaire was influenced by such painters as Henri Matisse, Paul Cézanne, and, later, by Fernand Léger. Gromaire served in World War I, until being wounded in 1916. His experiences from the war strongly influenced his artistic development and his work is associated with Social Realism and Expressionism. Condition: Not examined out of frame, some striated toning, but good condition overall. Seller Inventory # PR00196
