By 1908 he had published the first set of these in Darmstadt as Der Zupfgeigenhansl, or "The Pick-Fiddle John". The publishing history of Der Zupfgeigenhansl is extremely convoluted, but in later editions, the collection usually contains about 260 songs and is divided into 16 themes: Parting -- Minnedienst, or Chivalry -- Love Plaints -- Ballads -- Sacred Songs -- Evensongs -- Joy -- Summer -- Journeying SOngs -- Sea Songs -- Parlor Songs -- Soldier's Songs -- Festive Songs -- Rural Songs -- Dance -- Rounds. A number of the songs in these later editions were gathered from song collecting i n the field, others were collected from older published sources, but the main source was the songbooks published by Böhme, as well as works by Herder, Zuccalmaglio's German Folksongs, and some from Das Knaben Wunderhorn by Brentano and Arnim, plus t he Deutschen Liederhort by Erk and Böhme. Also, the older manuscript sources like the Carmina Burana or the Lochamer Liederbuch have contributed a few items. ; green cloth with black lettering ; no dustacket ; previous owner inscription on fornt endpaper ; foxing ; chord chart at back ; silhouettes in black throughout ; VG.
