Two volumes; 4 3/4 inches x 7 3/4 in., title-page; introduction. xiv, section title leaf, text of chapter 1 beginning on p. [13]-218; catalogue of books leaf; Vol. 2: title-page. [2]pp., text of book 4 continued, chapter 3, beginning on p. [3]-192; 36 pp. Harper's catalogue, dated 1842. Dark brown cloth, with printed paper title labels on the spine: Zanoni A Novel, by the Author of Eugene Aram, Pelham, &c. &c &c. Rough paper page edges. The spine ends show some chipping, to the spine of volume one, rubbing, wear to the spines, labels, covers, cover corners bent. Some brown spotting (foxing) on the endpapers, and pages is present. With the bookplates of Cleveland, Ohio based book collector, William G. Mather (1857-1951), on the front paste-down endpapers, and the pencil signatures of his father, Samuel L. Mather, July, 1844, above the bookplate, or on the facing endpaper, other ink and penciled early owner's names are on these endpapers or flyleaves: Henry A. Weeks Sr. R. H. Crittenden, Frankfort, Kentucky, V. M. Washington, Norwich, Conn. One of these earlier owners has penciled a few critical notes in the volumes: Volume Two, end of Chapter 7, p. 27: "Confound such nonsense!"; end of the final chapter, p. 192: "The poorest novel Bulwer ever wrote-decidedly so.". Scarce set in the original publisher's cloth binding. The English edition was also published in 1842. Seller Inventory # M-246
