About this title
A study of gardens and their history combines scholarship, detailed description and photography. This book is divided into thirteen sections, beginning with ancient Egypt and proceeding via the European Middle Ages, Renaissance Italy, France, England, the Iberian peninsula, Germany and Eastern Europe to 20th-century America. Parallel chapters treat China, Japan and the Islamic world. In each case, a historical account is followed by descriptions of surviving examples which can be visited today, thus creating in addition a guide to gardens all over the world, many - such as those in Poland and Russia - little known in the West. As restoration, research and publication unearth the great gardens of the past from the neglect of centuries, it is becoming clear that they represent a major part of cultural history. From Booklist:
Ogrin's comprehensive study takes as its starting point the ancient gardens of Egypt and goes on to highlight superb examples of Italian Renaissance, French baroque, and eighteenth-century English landscapes. Ogrin, a Slovenian professor of landscape architecture, surveys history and design traditions right up to present-day gardens worldwide. In a lively overview, Ogrin interweaves analysis of design issues with depictions of social conditions and personalities, revealing the elements crucial to fostering the brilliant designs and awe-inspiring landscapes pictured here. Ogrin has also compiled a good deal of less-familiar material that explores the spiritual foundations and philosophy of landscape design in China, Japan, and the Islamic gardens of the Middle East and India. A beautifully illustrated study and a fine resource to inspire gardeners and enlighten anyone involved with garden design. Alice Joyce
