About this Item
Roller map. Includes original roller and hanging bracket. Map measures 27" x 49.75". This map uses red dots to register global population, with each dot indicating between 50,000 and 100,000 people. Although printed in the post-war period, the overall map bears marked similarities to our present day: in particular, the red regions of India and China are both the largest and most saturated. As is common for population density maps, populations of fewer than 50,000 people are not shown, a trait that at once emphasizes the generally coastal distribution of the world's population and skews our perspective away from the small, local communities and rural areas. Teacher notes on the top in crayon 'stop' written twice. As this map was designed for educational use, it both provides historical information and draws us toward questions about cartographic representation, making it a fascinating example of what has become known in the present as "data visualization.".
