About this Item
5 1/8 inches x 7 3/8 in., woodcut design for a New Years Greeting: Ein Sonniges 1922 wunscht; with artists initials in the block: FR. Printed on a thin tissue type (proof) paper. The paper shows very light, age-related tanning. From the personal collection of Swiss-born artist and designer, Fred Rentschler, who emigrated to America in the early 1920's, and later taught at the Cleveland [Ohio] School of Art. His collection contained examples of proofs & finished pieces of bookplates, new year's greetings, book illustrations, title-page designs, initial letters, etc. mainly produced by Swiss artists & designers, ca. 1917-22, including a few of his Swiss bookplate designs. A rare item. An early example of Fred Rentschler's work, showing some Expressionist influence, and done when he was still living in Switzerland. Seller Inventory # ABE-1267536068
