About this Item
4 p. leaflet. 27 cm. Illustration on front. Vertical and horizontal crease. Tears in edges. Pencil notes. "On exhibition at Victoria Music Hall, Princess St., Kingston for six days only: commencing Tuesday, May 27th. Open from 2 to 9 p.m. Admission, 10 cents." "The only working model of the great Astronomical, Musical, Mechanical and Apostolic Clock ever Perfected. A beautiful painting of the cathedral in which the famous clock stands is also exhibited, and history given." Inside of leaflet gives history of the model while description is on rear. A write-up on this clock was published as "The Great Clock of Beauvais Cathedral and the Strasbourg Clock" in Scientific American 21, 8, 114 (August 1869). The 1843 version of the clock is still operating inside the Cathédrale Notre-Dame of Strasbourg, Alsace, France. It had 90,000 pieces, weighed over 35,000 lbs, was 36 ft high, and was made of sculpted oak. Showed the days of the week, sunrise and sunset, seasons, Zodiac, saints' days, moon phases, solstices, etc. The model referred to here may be the one built in 1887 by Australian watchmaker Richard Smith. Never having seen the original, Smith had to work from a pamphlet which described its timekeeping and astronomical functions. That model is in the collection of the Powerhouse Museum, Sydney, Australia. We don't know if it travelled to Canada ;-). Seller Inventory # 143451
