circa 1945-50; colour frontispiece, black & white illustrations including one folding, pictorial endpapers (with a little surface damage); original boards decorated in silver, with linen backstrip, a little soiled and with two scratches to rear cover, generally in good condition. Chapters headings include Speed Under Sail; Merchant Ships; Lifeboats, Launches and Torpedo Boats; The Development of the Destroyer; The Engineering Side. J Samuel White was a shipbuilding firm based in Cowes on the Isle of Wight and was well-known for its naval vessels, lifeboats and other commercial vessels. Over the years it acquired a number of shipbuilding and other businesses. Shipbuilding ceased in 1965 but the company continued to manufacture turbines, boilers and engines. In 1968 the group was sold and following a series of later takeovers what remained of the J Samuel White empire on the Isle of Wight was closed in 1981. Seller Inventory # 6708
