One of the earliest printed maps of the new West Australian colony, established as the Swan River Colony in 1829, just three years before this Royal Geographical Society Journal publication appeared. Printed in the top right hand corner is vol 1 page 1. The map has been flattened from it's original folded state and a small boarder has been added to make the section printed outside the boarder visible when framed. Paper Size 13.25 x16 inches with .25 inch boarder all round. This attractive map of the southwestern coastline extends from north of Perth to the south cost past Albany. The inland details derive from the explorations of Ensign Dale, Capt. Bannister, Lt. Preston, Capt. Collie and Currie, and all their tracks are marked and annotated with sightings, land formations, streams, etc. "These discoveries of Ensign Dale were deemed the most promising of all yet made in the west of Australia, and led to the opening up of lucrative agricultural and pastoral areas. It came as an encouraging feature to the minds of settlers on the Swan that behind the Darling Ranges were expansive stretches of pasture for their stock, and lightly wooded valleys and plains where they might till the soil. The wealth of the colony was augmented, and all were impressed with the importance of Dale's exploration." (Kimberly, W. B., "History of West Australia", Chapter 7.) The map was originally issued in 1831 in a very small run, with insets. Map with some light offsetting. Paper measures 13 1/4 x 15 1/2". Not recorded in Tooley.
