Green cloth with gilt title on spine; 82 pp. Text in Chinese on left-hand page; translation and notes in English on the opposite right-hand page. Some discoloration in the gutter of the front and back inner hinges, o/w in Fine condition. [23-123] In the Introduction, Hamilton claims that this is a translation of the Chinese version of ?one of the classical texts in the philosophy of Mahayana Buddhism. Its Sanskrit original, ?, was composed by the Indian thinker Vasubandhu. It belongs to a late development in the history of Indian Buddhism when interest had shifted from early emphasis on practical requirements for attaining nirvana to concern with metaphysical explanation as the superior means for achieving enlightenment? Vasubandhu?s organization of the ideas in brief but pregnant treatises came to be regarded as a major achievement in national statement for the highest meaning of Mahayana doctrine.?.
