Signatures: vol1. *8, **4, ***8, ****², blank leaf, A-Y in alternate 8's and 4's, Z4, Aa-Bb² (Bb2, blank, wanting); vol 2. a4, A-Z, Aa-Dd in alternate 8's and 4's (Dd8, blank). The text of this translation is the same as that of Paris editions of the same year, which was abridged and adapted by the abbe Pierre Francois Guyot Desfontaines from his own translation. Cf. Voyage au pais des Houyhnhnms. Very attractive old calf, backs elaborately gilt in six compartments, gilt burgundy morocco lettering pieces in the second & gilt vol number in the third. The rest with gilt filleted panels of gilt foliation enclosing diamond shape gilt floral centers, five raised bands. Bindings strong & sound. Vol 1 with piece (2 ¾in x 1 ¼in) torn from title. Short mostly marginal tears to A4-A8. Small marginal corner loss to plate 1. Sheets slightly age toned & clean. Neat 1783 name crossed out by another on the front free endpapers. Later name on rear paste down endpapers. The first edition of the first French translation is A La Haye: Chez P. Gosse & J. Neaulme, 1727. The translator is unknown. There is also a new translation with that imprint and date. The Desfontaines translation followed some months later Paris, 1727.
