"After having been twice driven back by heavy south-western gales, Her Majesty's ship Beagle, a ten-gun brig, under the command of Captain Fitz Roy, R.N., sailed from Devenport on the 27th of December, 1831." So begins one of the most exciting adventures in mankind's history - Charles Darwin's The Voyage of The Beagle. It was on this surveying expedition that Darwin, and eager young naturalist, fresh from college and a somewhat erratic academic career, recorded the observations on geology and natural history that were to become the foundation of his revolutionary theory On the Origin of Species." - from the rear outer cover.
