5th edition, corrected, and with a new preface, corrected, referring to late events. lxxv (75) + 343 pages, Original quarter leather & mottled hardback binding, fair, as front cover detached, and loss of top of spine, otherwise good with very little wear. Contents Good, clean & tight, no inscriptions, no foxing, has some light staining. The author was a journalist and newspaper editor, who visited France for the first time just at the end of the Napoleonic War, or what was assumed to be the end, since between his visit and first edition, Napoleon escaped and returned from exile on Elba. The preface states that this resulted in last minute changes to the text with what it was happening with some daily notes, then the final defeat of Napoleon and the occupation of the city by Russian forces and talks of the shocking actions of the Russians and their plundering, including the homes of members of the ex Government. Also how Paris, which lately was the safest place to be is now one of the most dangerous. John Scott (1783-1821) was a Newspaper editor, including lastly being the first editor of the 'London Magazine', to which Lamb and other famous writers contributed, but sadly died from wounds received in a strange duel with Jonathan Henry Christie. First published in 1815 then through several editions, partly due to additional information and major changes since then till this 5th edition of 1816 with the latest additions.
