About this Item
A scarce FINE copy of this 5th edition (ie. 4th reprinting) - April 1928 - with NO INSCRIPTION and clean throughout. Green boards with black lettering, normal 8vo. novel size, firm and square, soft white paper with just a little faint spotting to the fore-edge and slightly dusty top edge. Very scarce in this condition. This important title by the talented Louise Stanton, was first published by M & B in 1915 when otherwise publishing the likes of Wodehouse and Jack London, and then later revived in the 1920s when M & B began to corner the market in light fiction aimed at a growing number of female readers hungry for escapism. An early review suggests it will interest readers who hold to the theory of reincarnation. Dr. Keith Harding leaves England for West Africa: "This was not England but the tropics is where blood was hotter, where incredible things happen with amazing swiftness." Impressive 17 page M & B Book Catalogue to rear and titles to wrapper flaps. The rare unclipped wrapper is clean and complete with a little (4mm) roughness to top and tail of spine, and a closed 2cm tear to front bottom edge - remarkably good condition. The artwork is exceptional being a beautiful signed painting by the mysterious artist C[harles] Rebel Stanton, best known for his interior decoration of the Queen Mary liner [one internet source says that "Stanton completed the monumental bas-relief decorative mural panel with a clock depicting a nude woman reaching up toward a sphere that is the mural's clock. This mural graced the aft bulkhead of the second class overflow lounge during the entire sea life of the Queen Mary], his illustrative work for magazines and his delicate, whimsical paintings of nymphs and nudes. Stylistically, the cover picture is closest to the latter, though the seated Virgin is fully clothed in a nun's white habit. Nothing much is known about the artist although a relation has blogged that his distinctive forename "Rebel" derived from his WWI exploits [a Lt. CR Stanton was a member of the Rifle Brigade]. A scarce and important work of light fiction in an equally important scarce wrapper. 70% price reduction applied. Seller Inventory # 000589
