About this Item
An UNPUBLISHED view by Webber. This is a monochrome aquatint, a different process used in others of Webber's views. This was not published in either the extremely rare lifetime edition of "Views in the South Seas" nor the more common but still rare 1809 (1820) edition of "Views in the South Seas". "A View in Annamooka, One of the Friendly Isle's" is not directly recorded in Joppien & Smith, but this view with the date of Feby. 1, 1788 is obliquely referred to in the reference notes to Joppien & Smith 3.44b as a lone copy with this publication date in the British Museum, Dept. of Prints and Drawings. It could possibly be recorded as Joppien & Smith 3.44c. "Drawn & Etch'd by J. Webber. Aquatinta by M.C. Prestel. London Pubd. Feby. 1, 1788 by J. Webber No. 312 Oxford Street. Vide Cook's Last Voy. Vol. I Ch. IV". Printed on laid paper, watermarked. Very small amount of loss at corners expertly repaired. Trimmed within the impression mark. Printed area measures 40cm x 27cm; paper 43cm x 29cm.
