El texto histórico viene completado por el erudito francés Morel-Fatio, auxiliado por el bibliotecario Paz Mélia, que en la segunda parte, añaden un importantísimo apéndice con notas, la edición del manuscrito del Diario de la expedición contra Argel, escrito por un testigo, un interesante conjunto de cartas del Conde, escritas entre 1768 y 1784, y una completa biografía del autor.
