About this Item
1947, 3rd Edition, 4th Printing by Dent & Sons, London. Relatively tight blue boards with gilded lettering on spine. Spine has some rubbing and faded on both ends with very light tearing; boards in good condition with some folding along edges, and very light sunning. Both front and back end papers have a copy in blue ink of "Joseph Conrad" signature. 382 pages, with additional 4 pages of Joseph Conrad's "Biographical Notes", and 3 additional pages of " Joseph Conrad, Collected Editions by J.M.Dent & Sons, London. Overall pages are clean and clear text, but a little age toned. Minimal pencilled underlining by prior owner. The novel was written after the failed Russian Revolution of 1905 and takes place in St. Petersburg, Russia, and Geneva. "It is viewed as Conrad's response to the themes explored in "Crime and Punishment"as it has been noted that Conrad was to have detested Dostoevsky. It is also, some say, Conrad's response to his own early life as his father was a famous revolutionary imprisoned by the Russians. Instead of following in his father's footsteps, Conrad, at the age of sixteen, left Russia forever. While writing "Under Western Eyes", it is said that Conrad suffered a weeks-long breakdown during which he conversed with the novel's characters in Polish. While this novel is considered to be one of Conrad's major works, it is full of cynicism and conflict about the historical failures of revolutionary movements and ideals. Conrad remarks in this book, as well as others, on the irrationality of life, the opacity of character, the unfairness with which suffering is inflicted upon the innocent and poor, and the careless disregard for the lives of those with whom we share existence.
