140 p. 19 cm. Frontispiece portrait of the author. Leather spine with paper-covered boards. Beautiful paper patterned with gold and green maple leaves on cream background. Gold lettering. Leather worn on spine ends and corners also worn. A little light soiling to front board. Author and journalist Goldwin Smith (1823-1910) moved to Toronto in 1871. Here he relates England's history as well as describing the England of the time eg. manufacturing towns, the London "hive," London society, the great Public Schools, English farmers, the Country Squire, etc. Seller Inventory # 113181
