Small 4to. Hardcover. Two volumes. Vol 1. Pp. 202. Vol 2. Pp. 304. Translated From the French by W. Hazlitt. Second Edition. Very good condition. Cloth-binding, elaborately blind-stamped decoration on front cover. With a recent leather spine with raised bands and gilt title on the label. Gilt top of fore-edge. Cover shows signs of shelf-wear, with corners lightly bumped and a few small stains. The cover of volume 2 has darkened, whereas volume 1 retains some of its original brightness. Illustrated with engravings and a folding map. Book plate from previous owner's collection on front endpaper. Pages themselves are unmarked and clean with light foxing. In Vol 1, the map on page 8 has a slight tear at the bottom. In both volumes, small pen inscription dated 1960 on the bottom right of the rear endpaper. M. Huc served for 14 years as a missionary in China, and in this, his first book, he describes the journey into Tibet and traces the history of Christianity in the region. William Hazlitt was an English essayist, drama and literary critic, painter, social commentator, and philosopher. He is now considered one of the greatest critics and essayists in the history of the English language, placed in the company of Samuel Johnson and George Orwell.
