Observations based on a tour of the northern countries (1757-1779) by the historian and cleric, William Coxe (1748-1828), while travelling as tutor to Lord George Herbert, future 11th Earl of Pembroke (1759-1827). The illustrations include : folding plans of St Petersburg, Moscow, Stockholm and Copenhagen, folding maps of Poland, European Russia, southern Sweden, the Caspian Sea, the duchies of Schleswig Holstein, the canals of Trolhaetta, Vishnei Voloshok, and Kiel , fullpage portraits of Catherine II of Russia, Stanislaus of Poland, Gustavus III of Sweden, and the rebel Pugatchev, costume plates, and genealogical and statistical tables (census of Swedish population).
