x, 518 p. 22 cm. Half leather with marbled boards. Tears in upper hinges, spine label chipped, spine leather worn, corners bumped, edges worn. A little soiling or thumbing to title page. Pages neat and clean. No half title. Title continues: "Describing the present state of the social and political institutions, the agriculture, manufactures, commerce, education, arts and manners in that country, particularly in the Kingdom of Hannover." Mainly about Hannover, its civil and criminal laws, appropriation of landed property, agriculture, manufacturing, commerce, schools. Other topics: University of Gottingen, the German language, literature, private life and morals, Cassel and Frankfort. Appendix. The author travelled te continent for three years after the Napoleonic wars, observing social and economic conditions. Many anecdotes demanded by publisher to make the book more interesting: "The Germans have a method of hawking their affections in public, which robs them of much of their sanctity and holiness. There is a mawkish display of love between persons of different sexes that is rather indelicate and disgusting" (p. 440). Seller Inventory # 129489
