By an Officer (Thomas Anburey), A New Edition, Complete in Two Volumes, Printed for William Lane, London, 1791, folding canvas map, colored in outline at front of volume one, nine engraved plates (six folding), later half leather, 9 x 5.5 , 8vo. In good condition. Later binding likely done in the early 20th late 19th-century. Wonderfully preserved. Light wear to extremities with minor scuffing to edges and corners. Minor abrasions to raise bands. John Madden Ex-Libris, a Lord in Ireland. Ex-library of Harry Wesley Bass Jr. (1927-1998), was an American businessman, coin collector, and philanthropist. He was active in the Texas Republican Party during the late 1950s when the state was still dominated by the Democratic Party. In 1970, Bass and his brother Richard inherited the Goliad Oil and Gas Corporation. Light toning throughout each volume. Remarkably bright and clean. Folding plates in excellent condition. Bindings are tight and intact. Rear and front end papers are fresh. some have light foxing. All edges speckled. Sotheby s auction tag dated 3/24/70 on rear pastedowns. Please see photos. Second edition. Thomas Anburey was an officer in the British Army during the American Revolution, serving under Burgoyne. This work describes the disastrous campaign and his captivity by the Americans, and the march of the British troops to detention in Charlottesville, Virginia. The engravings, some of them are quite large when unfolded, are based on expert drawings by the author, and show scenes of Canada and New York during the Burgoyne campaign (including a Native American with a dripping scalplock), and in Virginia.
