"Morel's treatise on mental diseases reflects his interest in degeneracy: He studied the institution of the insane asylum in Europe and reformulated coercive procedures used against the mentally ill. The accent was on heredity, toxins (such as alcohol, narcotics, metal poisoning, pellagra, goiter) and 'sympathies,' that is, mental diseases due to primary brain disease. Hysteria, hypochondria, and epilepsy are grouped together, and what appear to be psychoses proper are put in the nex-to-last (fifth) group as 'idiopathic' - a term . having no meaning but that of a verbal label" - Zilboorg & Henry. Morel was the last of the great nineteenth-century French psychiatrists." 8vo. (4), XVI, 866 pp. Demi-chagrin brun, dos à nerfs orné. (Reliure de l'époque.) --------------------Première édition.
