Printed title page preceeded by coloured frontispiece & cold. engraved title page & 23 cold. aquatint plates complete with pls. as 'Directions to the Binder' Three volumes, Tall 8vo. (254x170mm), 78 coloured aquatint plates & 2 coloured engraved title pages in vols. 1 & 3. The '2nd state' of vols. 1 & 2. Tall copy with good margins, 1819-20-21, occasional light foxing & offsetting, however overall a very good set, vol. 1 lacking front endpaper with Simms & Dinham Booksellers ticket to head of inside front cover. Uniformly bound in original blind stamped cloth, spines with gilt titles & gilt decoration, light wear & spine ends snagged, otherwise very good. "The misadventures of this elderly pedant gave Rowlandson ample scope for the comic designs of which he was a master and the three books which deal with Syntax were his greatest success as an illustrator". This celebrated work first appeared in the Poetical Magazine under the title "The Schoolmaster's Tour" & the illustrations are the same but retouched & re-engraved by Rowlandson, with 3 additional illustrations incl.
